PADI OPEN WATER SCUBA CLASSES
Learn to Scuba Dive!: Scuba diving is just THE MOST FUN you'll ever have, but you have to learn to do it right! Oklahoma Scuba has always set the standard for excellence in scuba training. These days, we're a co-operative of independent PADI Professionals who want to introduce you to the thrill and excitement of scuba diving. We'll take the time to teach you just what you need to know to dive safely. We have classes starting monthly!
All of the PADI Professional Scuba Instructors at Oklahoma Scuba just LOVE to teach diving. With many years of diving and teaching experience (we've been teaching continuously at the YMCA in Norman since 1985, as well as at several other venues), state of the art computerized classroom facilities, and a desire to share our knowledge and love of our own special underwater world, we teach the very best dive classes around. We refuse to do 'crash courses', and we don't want you to sit at home trying to teach yourself how to scuba dive, WE want to teach YOU. Oklahoma Scuba's students are the best trained divers possible, because we take the time to guide you to your goal.
Our regularly scheduled classes include a Thursday-Friday evening (6pm - 9pm) course and a Saturday afternoon course (1pm - 7pm) course, each 3 weeks long plus the required Open Water Dives. The PADI Open Water course is $350 per person, which includes the books, and each student needs to have their own Mask, Snorkel, Fins, & Booties, which can be purchased from Oklahoma Scuba at a great discount.

FAQs Do I need to be able to swim to learn to scuba dive? Of course you do!, but you don't have to be a competitive swimmer. You just have to have a comfortable swimming ability. You'll swim a few laps (just 200 yards) in the pool (not timed), and you'll tread water or float for 10 minutes. How early do I have to enroll in a class before it starts? You need give yourself time to read the first chapter in the textbook and do a little homework before the first class meeting, so you should enroll at least a few days in advance.
What equipment do I have to purchase ? Each student will need his own MASK, SNORKEL, FINS, and WETSUIT-BOOTIES. You may purchase your own, or you can rent these items from us for the course. If you purchase these items from Oklahoma Scuba, you'll of course get our special Student Discount off of the regular price, plus we can make sizing and fit adjustments that we couldn't make if you purchased your gear elsewhere. We provide the rest of the equipment that you need to use in the course (BCs, Regulators, Dive Computers, Wetsuits, Weights, etc.) Why does the class take so long? Our classes aren't too long, but there are lots of scuba classes out there that are way too short! We just don't think scuba can be taught effectively in a single weekend. We don't believe that 'home study' or online classes are the best way to teach entry-level scuba, though homework is an important part of our classes. So, How much does it REALLY cost to become a Scuba Diver? That depends on you. The Course with the books is $350, and your snorkeling gear can cost between $140 and $400, depending on what you pick. It'll cost you about a tank of gas to go the the lake for your Open Water dives. Anything else you spend is extra that you want to spend. Many people want to go ahead and invest in a set of top-of-the-line dive gear, many don't. Some choose to do their OW dives on a trip to Cozumel instead of at the lake. It just depends on you! |
FAQs Who can learn to Scuba Dive? Just about anyone who is in good physical condition and has a comfortable swimming ability can learn to scuba, but it's not for everybody. People who are very claustrophobic and people who are afraid of the water usually don't like scuba. Trying to learn to scuba dive is a terrible way to overcome a fear of the water! People as young as 10 years of age can be certified, but there's not a 'kids class' Youngsters have the same certification requirements as the grownups, both academically and physically, and must earn their own certification.
Do I have to scuba dive in the lake? You have to make 4 'open water' dives to complete the certification process. Most of our students finish the class at one of our local lakes, but some choose to make their dives in tropical water, either on their own vacation as a referral, or on one of Oklahoma Scuba's frequently scheduled fun and affordable trips. We'd LOVE to take you to Cozumel for your certification dives! About our 'LAKE DIVES'. Some of our competitors accuse that you'll spend hundreds of dollars and a whole weekend of time if you don't do your dives in their metro-area mud-hole. Our lake dives are made either at Lake Elmer Thomas or at Lake Murray, both about a 90 minute drive, and both fine dive sites. We don't spend the night either place, so you'll spend 2 four and a half or five hour sessions on 2 separate days making the dive. You'll spend the cost of a single tank of gas, plus whatever you spend on lunch after the dives. Easy, Efficient, and Economical, to say the least. Just the way we like it. Do I have to get a physical exam to learn to dive? Not necessarily; you have to be in good health, which we'll evaluate by using our standard Medical Questionairre. If you do have health issues, you'll have to obtain approval from your physician to participate in scuba training. Here's the form
